Hemp Guidebook: Selenium

Finally, we look at Selenium. This is the final component of Hemp for our Guidebook. I want to thank you for coming along on this research journey.

Originally I began this extensive look at the different compounds in Hemp when I realized that my own knowledge was lacking. In order to supplement this, I broke down what each compound in Hemp was and researched them.

I hope this guidebook will be as useful for you as it was for me.

Selenium is very important for the body and can be found in many different ways. Getting enough on a daily basis is essential for your well-being.

Let’s look at our final mineral that can be found in the Hemp Plant.

Selenium

What is Selenium?

As essential trace minerals go, Selenium is something that will make or break your body. It can help to maintain your immune system, improve cognitive function, and manage fertility.

Selenium has been noted to enhance your thyroid metabolism and contributes to the synthesis of DNA. It protects the human body from cardiovascular disease by stopping oxidation modification of fats and lipids present in your body.

These benefits, in conjunction with the things that other minerals such as Iron, Calcium, etc, and the Cannabinoid and Terpenes present in Hemp create a powerful healing matrix.

These are the different compounds that contribute to the Entourage Effect, a concept that describes the exponentially beneficial effects of Hemp.

Selenium can be recovered from foods such as rice, lentils, potatoes, spinach, carrots, dairy, brazil nuts, shrimp, chicken, and beef.

In addition to this, supplements are always an option as well, but care should be taken as not to over consume.

Healthy Levels

Selenium consumption is calculated by the World Health Organization. They have released this information as the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) and these depend on Age group and Gender.

Called Wellness CBD Memory

Infants younger than 6 months should consume 15 MCG of Selenium. Those between the ages of 1 year and 3 years should maintain a Selenium intake of 20 MCG. Selenium consumption should rise to 30 MCG for children between the ages of 4-8.

From the Ages of 9-13, youths should be taking 40 MCG of Selenium, this rises to 55 MCG for those in the age group of 14-18.

Finally, Adults from age 19-51 should be talking 55 MCG as well.

Pregnant and lactating women are a special case, they should observe a higher intake of Selenium. 60-70 MCG of Selenium is recommended.

Selenium Deficiency

Selenium Deficiency

Selenium below the advisable levels can be particularly deadly for the human body. Individuals become prone to carcinogenic risks due to the negative impact low-selenium has on your DNA synthesis, Apoptosis, and endocrine system.

Inadequate Selenium consumption significantly increases the risk of prostate, bladder, and esophageal cancers.

Thyroid volume, susceptibility to goiters and risk of thyroid tissue damage increase with insufficient levels. High blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and consequentially death can occur with low levels.

These ailments describe a deficiency that is potentially the most dangerous out all possible deficiencies we’ve covered. I cannot overstate the importance of seeing a medical professional in the even that you feel ill!

Selenium Over-consumption

Selenium in excessive levels can carry some equally dangerous possibilities.

Selenium

Individuals can experience untimely hair loss, nail loss, brittleness of nails, and malodorous breath. Other symptoms of over consumption of Selenium include nervous system abnormalities, diarrhea, and skin rashs.

Toxicity of Selenium brings more serious issues such as respiratory distress syndrome, muscle tenderness, myocardial infraction, and kidney failure.

In Conclusion

As we can see, proper maintenance of Selenium, and all minerals for that matter, will bring about a healthy life. It is important to make sure you are receiving enough of these vitamins and minerals every day.

If you begin to feel sick, it is important to visit a medical professional who can diagnose, treat, and potentially cure any deficiencies or toxicities.

For those who are having trouble modulating Selenium, or any other number of minerals/vitamins, I would suggest adding Hemp Extract to your diet.

Hemp Extract has many compounds that are beneficial to the body aside from Cannabinoids and Terpenes.
